Earthbound: Chapter 26

When I woke up, it was dark. Not sure how long I had slept – hours, days, months? I went outside and sat on the porch. Toward the east, the black velvet sky was starting to fade to grey. I watched as the grey gave way to red, then orange, then pink, then pale blue. Fiery gold outlined the scattered clouds. At last, the huge vermilion sun pushed its way above the horizon. The fiery sun against the pale sky reminded me of blue Nicniven and her red scepter. Her words echoed in my mind. “I am helping you. You exist between life and death, belonging to neither. Finish your journey to the other side.” << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 25

I kept my eyes down, avoiding her face. “So, they’ve sent out the sacrificial lamb?” the monster purred, shielding her eyes. I didn’t know if she knew what the blob of blue light behind me was, but she kept her distance. “I’m sorry about your child.” I was, actually. I hadn’t wanted to kill the thing. The demon coughed. “No matter. I will still devour you.” “I wish I had known another way to make him go.” A sharply focused ray of blue light broke from the shapeless blob in the kitchen and fell on the monster. Backing away from me, she squirmed and clawed at her crusty skin, as if ants were crawling on her. I thought about how I would feel and what I would do if someone killed my family. It was easy. The wounds from Úna’s injury were still raw. If only Eden had left Paris alone! Before I could stop it, white hot anger flared up inside me. The demon lunged at me. I tried to twist away from her, but I wasn’t fast enough. Her jagged fangs snapped shut on what would have been my left hip, if I still had a solid body. Her touch was cold. Cold as the dark side of the moon. I pulled away from her, but the damage was done. << MORE >>

Eartbound: Chapter 24

Eden was being held in the claws of a demon. It was not the same demon from before. This one was much bigger and uglier. Like other one, it had ram’s horns on its head, a burly human upper body and wolf’s legs, but this one had tusks like an elephant, and it looked female. It was a little hard to tell with the boils and oozing sores. “You slaughtered my child,” the demon hissed. Oh, good. The demon’s mother. The silver dagger was in the house and there was no one to help me. Mama stared past me, unseeing. “It was nothing personal. He was planning to eat me.” I summoned as much bravado as I could. I hoped she didn’t notice how terrified I really was. “Silence!” mother demon roared. Surely Conall or Beagan or even Connie heard that and would show up to help me. Any second now. Any second. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 23

“He was right here!” I cried, pointing to a large area of trampled down grass. “Well, he’s not here now. Don’t go fretting yourself, Schuyler. I believe you.” “Where could it have gone?” I asked, looking around frantically, afraid it might pop out from around the corner of the house. “Hard to say. I’ve not seen a demon, alive or dead. It could have dissolved into the earth. Magical creatures would do that. Or maybe it was playing dead until you left so it could escape.” He spoke to me, but looked toward the farmhouse. “Perfect. Just perfect. I still have to think of a way to get rid of Aldrich. The last thing I need is a half-dead demon lurking about.” “Yep. I would think a wounded demon would be right vengeful.” “You’re not helping.” << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 22

Conall rushed to Úna and cradled her in his arms. He scrabbled and pressed desperately with his hands, trying to stop the energy bleeding away from her. My mother helped him. I stood by helplessly, watching little sparkling puffs of Úna float away from her and dissipate into the room. It felt like ages before the wound was sealed. She lay in Conall’s lap, and she did not look good. Parts of her kept fading into nothing, then coming back, so that she was flickering in and out of sight. I wished I had tears to cry and wash away the fear and the dread I felt seeing her in such a state. Why Úna? Why couldn’t it have been…Eden? I stared at my mother, willing her to switch places with my stricken friend. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapters 20 & 21

The Haunted Planet crew scurried around the house like ants, stringing cables and lights, arranging furniture and knickknacks. “Rod, should we rig up the barn?” one of the crew asked. “Nah. Just an old barn. I don’t expect anything interesting’s happened there,” Rodney replied. I almost laughed out loud. Then I looked at the clock. “Úna, school’s been out an hour now. I think I should go check on Sheridan, just to make sure she’s settled in properly at Andrea’s house.” “That’s a grand idea, but take someone with you, Schuyler.” “I’ll go with you.” Where had Eden come from, and why did she insist on shoehorning her way into my business? I could tell by the way Úna looked at me that I had no choice. “Fine, Eden. Let’s get going.” “Do you know where she is?” Eden asked, artificially pleasant. “I guess at Andrea’s house.” “Perhaps. Perhaps not. Here is a trick I learned in Spirit Guide School. It isn’t common knowledge, you see. If you want to locate someone, focus on the feel of their energy. Knowing their name makes it a lot easier. Once you can feel them, will yourself there.” << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 19

I had to give up on my plan of having Connie lead Aldrich the treasure map. Thanks, demon. May first arrived, moist and dreary. Rodney Aldrich and the Haunted Planet entourage stopped at the village pub for lunch. Aldrich, of course, was in costume. I suppose that was to let everyone know who he was. Like advertising for the circus. Úna and I went down to see the spectacle. Doyle’s Tavern was heaving. I had no idea there were so many people living around here. One advantage to being a ghost: no queuing in line. We went in and found a prime viewing spot. Aldrich was sitting at a table with the young woman I’d seen at his studio. A red plastic basket lined with paper and filled with sambos and chips sat in front of each of them. He had a pint of beer and she had mineral water. << MORE >>

Earthbound: 17 & 18

“Don’t. Turn. Around. Come to me. Now!” I was frightened by the urgency of her tone, so I did as she said. I heard a snort and the footfalls of horse hooves on hay as Niamh came up beside Connie. She had her ears pinned back and her teeth bared. “Don’t look at it. It knows your name, at least part of it. If you look in its eyes, it may take you.” “Right. Okay. What would ‘it’ be?” “Non-deads would call it a demon,” she said, glaring over my shoulder at the thing behind me. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 16 - Best Laid Plans

“Úna! Úna!” I called as I rocketed through the door. “What is it, child?” she asked. She was in the kitchen, as usual. “Did you see her? Did you know she’s come back?” “Who, Schuyler? Who?” << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapters 14 and 15

I sighed, but Sheridan didn’t hear me. I had been neglecting her so since the Rodney Aldrich thing came up. She seemed to be doing okay, so maybe I was doing alright by her. At least I hoped so. I would never be able to forgive myself is something happened to her because I wasn’t paying attention. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 13 - Dirt

I glided down the motorway until I found an exit for Cambridge Town Centre. I followed that, and, someone must have been looking out for me, because I was on Trumpington Road. By now, the last of the lingering twilight had gone and it was full dark. Evergreen trees on the right side of the road cast inky pools of shadow on the sidewalk. The left-hand side of the road was bordered by a meadow. It wasn’t long before I came to a locked gate. The sign read “Cambridge University Botanic Garden”. I looked through the fence. The pale path was quickly swallowed in the dark of the wood, which stretched towards infinity in this deep night. I looked up. Even the stars were pale and far away. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 12 - Bean Nighe

Instead of the obelisk in the back of the churchyard, Beagan had taken me to the cathedral. Well, maybe church is a better description. He took my hand and we stepped behind the holy water font by the front door. Instantly, we were sucked up along the Ley line. I tried to keep track of where we were going and count purple glows, but we were moving too fast. We made turns and exits and re-entries, and I lost track. Finally, we popped out of the Ley system. Bees buzzed around a flower-covered blackthorn bush. About thirty meters away, an old woman was washing clothes in a rocky stream, singing to herself in Irish. Blood from her laundry stained the water in the shallow creek and drifted downstream. At first, she did not seem to notice us. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 11 - Trust

When I got back to the farm, I went straight to Úna. I told her about Henk and how he got the address of Haunted Planet’s studio. She frowned at me. “You should be more careful, child, who you speak to. Urisk aren’t common here; they’re mostly in Scotland. They are alright if they have a mind to be. There are other creatures out there that are fair dangerous. Just because you’re a ghost doesn’t mean you can’t be harmed.” It wasn’t that I didn’t believe Úna. But I just didn’t understand. I suppose it is like when you’re little and your mother tells you not to touch the hot stove. You don’t take it seriously until you get burned. If only I had realized how close I was standing to the fire. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 10 - Henk

I don’t understand why Gránuaile’s vendetta against the Joyces was more important than helping us. It was 500 years ago. Why couldn’t she just let it go, already? How could such a famous pirate could be so useless? I had no idea how to find Rodney Aldrich and observe him. If I waited until he got to the farm, it would be too late. I felt defeated before I even started. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 9 - Fiona's Radio

Electricity is the easiest thing to manipulate. Making the lights flicker is a snap. But no one really notices, not here. The lights flicker all the time, anyway. A funny thing though, thoughts are a type of electricity, and they can easily be read, if the thinker isn’t shielding them. That was one of the very first things Úna taught me. How to read and how to shield. Electronic devices are much harder. It’s brilliant and spooky to make your voice come out over the radio or telly, but it’s hard, really hard. Mama had a little radio that she left behind, but if I wanted to practice on a telly, I had to go into town. In eight years, I had not been able to do this. So far, my best has been a few clicks on the radio. I thought I made the picture roll on the telly at my dad’s local once, but I never really knew if it was me, or just bad reception. Úna and Conall never bothered trying it, so they were no help. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 8 - Grace

I wished I could feel the cool sea breeze and the gritty squish of sand between my toes. We went to a sandy beach once, before Mama got pregnant with Sheridan. I remember building sand castles and playing in the sea. Dad held my hand as we jumped waves together. “Look to your left,” said Conall, snapping me out of my reverie. Gránuaile’s castle squatted next to the pier. It wasn’t what I was expecting. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 7 - Rescue

"The bleedin' fishermen have seen her." The shark lazily swam on, sucking up plankton, unaware of the mortal danger she was in. "Schuyler, go up there and distract them." "What?!" "I will call a storm, but it takes a little while. Go up there and appear, or shove a wrench in the engine works. I don't care what, just do something. She hasn't got much time," she said, looking at the basking shark undulating slowly ahead. "They'll try to drive her to shallow water and trap her there before they harpoon her." Desperation made the swirling of Cait’s voice more like a storm surge then a gentle tide.<< MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 6 - The Merrows

I didn’t know ghosts could feel pain. As soon as the scepter touched me, it was like hot needles were sticking into me. Then I felt heavy and solid. After I plunged into the waves, something tapped me on the head. I put my hand up and felt something… a hat? Couldn’t be. I started to pull the thing off when a bony hand pushed it back down on my head, prying my fingers off it. I turned to see a desperately ugly man with small, red-rimmed eyes and sharp green teeth. But that wasn’t even the weird part. From the waist down, he was a fish. And he was wearing a little red hat. Another one like him was holding a red cap and lurking near the surface. Conall splashed into the water nearby. The fish man crammed the hat he had been holding onto Conall’s head. They pulled both of us down into the water all the way to the seabed. Surely I would dissolve before they started to eat me. << MORE >>

Earthbound: Chapter 5 - Nicniven

“Let go!” I yelled. It did not. I turned to see that there was a man holding on to me. A man with sharp features and blueberry skin. Wild shaggy hair hung in his eyes, which were black from edge to edge. Another like him had hold of Conall. Two more stood ready to attack us. “Don’t struggle, Schuyler. These are the good neighbors. Elphs. They could tear ya apart with the flick of a wrist.” << MORE >>
